Kootenay Street Sidewalk

The Village is pleased to share that construction of a new sidewalk on Kootenay Street, between 6th Avenue (Main Street / Highway 31A, across from the Knox Hall & North Slocan Community Library) and Slocan Avenue (at The Osprey Residence / Recycling Depot) is scheduled to take place in June, July, and August 2025. In addition to the new sidewalks, safe crossings with curb returns will be constructed at the intersections on either side. Drainage and road grade will also be improved. This project is funded by a Ministry of Transportation and Transit Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant, by Vision Zero BC, and by the Village of New Denver. The construction project has been awarded to Kays Contracting, based outside of Nelson.

At the same time, Kays Contracting will be completing accessibility improvements in front of the Knox Hall, part of an Enabling Accessibility Fund grant provided by Employment and Social Development Canada. This includes a curb return, sidewalk drops, and an accessible parking stall.

Project Updates & Notices

June 2, 2025: Beginning Tuesday, June 2 and for approximately two weeks, contractors are working on the first phase of Kootenay Street sidewalk improvement work. This portion of the project focuses on a retaining wall at the north end of the block (Kootenay Street will remain open through this work) and drainage at the south end of the block.

**Please note that at the same time, the Village’s Well #1 & Pumphouse #1 on Kootenay Street are being decommissioned and demolished. This may result in road closures in the 700 Block of Kootenay Street, adjacent to the sidewalk work.**

Safety and Awareness

During this construction project, like any other, safety is a top priority. The Village requires that all residents and visitors respect signage and barriers at all times. Do not approach construction contractors on the site and do not cross any barriers, in a vehicle, on foot, bike, scooter, skateboard, or otherwise.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as this work is completed.
